The Technician II - Welder works at the United States Postal Service (USPS) Central Repair Facility (CRF) in Topeka, KS. The CRF is a depot repair facility for USPS mail processing, delivery, and bulk mail systems repairable parts. Examples: repairing printed circuit boards, electrical, electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies to component level. The CRF provides depot level maintenance for essential automation, mechanization, retail and bulk mail processing systems used in all mail processing and retail installations.

Our Welder is assigned to the Fabrication Shop. Direct supervision and instructions are given for routine work and detailed instructions given for new activities or special assignments. Duties and tasks are varied but standardized. Resolves routine questions and problems, and refers more complex questions to higher levels. Fabricates piece parts using blueprints, sketches, hand tools, welding equipment, stick and wire feed, metal working machines, and measuring equipment. Operates metal working machinery to fabricate components, housings, fittings, jigs and fixtures, and verifies dimensions using micrometers and calipers. Specializes in welding of metal materials. Determines proper feeds, speeds, and operation sequence, or selects those prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts using welding equipment, AC/DC, MIG/TIG. Work involves fitting and assembling parts to prescribed tolerances and allowances. Performs welding processes on aluminum and steel parts and assemblies to required tolerances using welding materials and metal alloys. Determines layouts and welds parts and assemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications. Receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher level technician and work is reviewed for specific compliance with accepted practices and work assignments. Assists in fabrication of various components. Assignments may include all other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

• High School graduate or equivalent

• Two years of formal training and/or military training with a minimum of four years of documented, current experience, or six years documented, current experience in lieu of formal training, with a demonstrated ability to perform

• Must be able to:

- Lift forty (40) pounds

- Plan, perform, and operate welding equipment

- Read schematics and blueprints as they relate to welding

- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to select proper welding equipment and materials

- Demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in using precision measuring equipment

- Demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze metal alloys

- Demonstrate knowledge of the different gasses and combination of gasses and their applications for welding

- Operate plasma cutter, oxygen and acetylene torch

- Obtain and maintain a government security clearance
