Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems located inSan Diego, CAhas an opening for an Engineer Systems 2 (VMS Avionics Engineer Navigation).

Essential Functions:

The Global Hawk program (and its derivatives - ROK, NATO, Japan) seeks a candidate to support the Vehicle Management System (VMS) Hardware Avionics team. The VMS group is responsible for vehicle flight control and safety. The Hardware Avionics group is responsible for management of the following VMS subsystems: navigation, Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Radar Altimeter (RadAlt), Air Data System (ADS), flight actuation system, Integrated Mission Management Computer (IMMC flight computer), VTC, and the Ethernet switch. This position has an emphasis on the Navigation subsystem, with the expectation that the candidate will grow as a member of the team and take on additional subsystem duties over time. General duties for the candidate will include: development of requirements for flight critical avionics equipment, informal and formal testing of subsystem requirements in lab, conducting trade studies, working with software team to implement requirements, troubleshooting of hardware in lab, supporting flight test activities, resolution of flight test anomalies, supplier management, and responding to customer inquiries. Specific duties related to the Navigation subsystem include lab integration and formal testing, flight test support, anomaly resolution, and supplier coordination.

The VMS Hardware Avionics team seeks candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and the ability to organize work, manage time, plan, and prioritize.

Basic Requirements for the position include the following:

  • Bachelor's degree inElectrical or Aerospace Engineeringalong with 2+ years' experience

  • Active Department of Defense Secret clearance or higher

  • 1+ years' experience with databuses such asMIL-STD-1553B, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, ARINC 429, Ethernet

  • General understanding of the GPS system and how it works, general understanding of inertial sensors and how they work.

Preferred Requirements for the position include the Basic Requirements and the following:

Clearance Level: TS

Flight Test experience: Some experience desired

Supplier management: Some experience desired

Deep understanding of the GPS system, the GPS Signal in Space characteristics, DGPS systems, inertial sensors, GPS/INS tightly coupled Kalman filters, GPS receiver design
