Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Foundations in math, physics, thermodynamics, propulsion, and computer skills are important in evaluating rocket motor performance of various defense and aerospace systems.

The Propulsion Engineer will work in the exciting and challenging world of tactical propulsion. The position will be based at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) in Rocket Center, WV just outside of Cumberland, MD. The Allegany Ballistics Laboratory (ABL) site in Rocket Center designs, develops and manufactures tactical rocket motors, medium caliber ammunition, composite components and end items, and fuze and electronics equipment. For decades, the dedicated and highly skilled team at ABL have supported national security efforts by developing and building defense systems for DoD customers and U.S. allies.

This posting is for a design engineer supporting production products (product engineer). It is a multifaceted position where the successful candidate will function as the technical lead for all aspects of their assigned program. Position responsibilities center on the use of various technical principles to perform analysis, design, or test portions of complex materials, structural components, and functional systems.

Specific responsibilities include:

Function as the primary point of contact for all technical communications with both internal and external customers to address program technical issues as they arise.

Drive the program to continuous improvements focusing on product reliability, reproducibility, cost, and program period of performance. The product engineer works with the IPT (Integrated Product Team) to develop, evaluate (thru analytical methods and/or testing), and submit for approval design and process improvements.

Function as the primary technical point of contact for the supply base for assigned programs to address supplier manufacturing issues. This includes working with suppliers to develop new manufacturing techniques, implement design changes for manufacturability, and aiding the suppliers to determine root cause for technical issues.

Serve as a member of the Material Review Board (MRB), with the Mission Assurance engineer, to evaluate all defective hardware for compliance to the TDP and determine appropriate disposition, including acceptance, rejection, re-work, or re-pair. The engineer works with process engineering to define and approve re-work process and often is the attending engineer when the re-work is performed.

Serve as the primary design authority to address changes resulting from design improvements, customer requirements changes, or material obsolescence issues.

Function as the cognizant test engineer for any testing performed on the program.

Qualifications:

Qualifications for level 2:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in related engineering field plus at least 2 years of experience or a Masters degree in a related engineering field with 0 Years or more years of experience.

  • Must be US citizen and able to obtain a secret clearance

  • Strong communication and leadership skills

  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with DOD and/or government agencies

  • Diverse engineering experience with strong focus on attention to detail

  • Familiar with GD&T standards

Qualifications for level 3:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in related engineering field plus at least 5 years of experience, or a Masters degree in a related engineering field with 3 Years or more years of experience, or a PhD in in a related engineering field with 0 Years or more years of experience.

  • Must be US citizen and able to obtain a secret clearance

  • Strong communication and leadership skills

  • Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with DOD and/or government agencies

  • Diverse engineering experience with strong focus on attention to detail

  • Familiar with GD&T standards
