Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for a Staff Engineering Designer to join our team of highly qualified and diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California.
Position is for a senior level mechanical designer/engineer supporting thermal insulation engineering SOW.
Research, design, develop thermal insulation (MLI) for the Thermal Insulation Products organization
Develop/evaluate standards, DOIs and training materials
Perform producibility/manufacturability assessments on thermal insulation products and provide input to design engineering to enhance manufacturability, quality and performance
Applies technical expertise to the planning, design, development and testing of thermal insulation products
Provide project management support utilizing tools such as earned value measurement system (EVMS) and forward-looking predictive metrics (i.e., leading indicators)
Identify and initiate corrective action of problems, discrepancies and deficiencies to ensure requirements (technical, schedule, & cost) are met and product quality is not compromised
Lead IRAD activities and act as technical resource for department
Strong leadership skills, ability to lead and mentor junior engineers and technicians
Lead a moderate to large work package (4-7 person team)
Supports design reviews as senior technical reviewer in the area of MLI
Ensure effective coordination between the design teams (Vehicle Engineering, Thermal, Contamination Control, etc.) and MLI
Demonstrate exceptional technical leadership and problem solving abilities for multiple programs across the Sector
Establish capabilities and processes that support long-range strategic goals for the Thermal Insulation Products organization
Identify areas of program risk & develop plans for corrective action
Manage procedure development and execution activities
Verify adequacy and accuracy of all procedures and ensures compliance to all department command media
Plans and coordinates preparation of project documentation, such as integration procedures (CAPE), engineering drawings, and production specifications/schedules, to ensure customer requirements are met
Develop and maintain procedure release status reporting structure per the project plan
Possess strong communication and presentation skills. Ability to interface with project management/IPT, RDE, SPM, customer and functional management
Track and report status of as-installed MLI configuration across programs as reflected in procedures
Track and provide status on plans and schedules that describe the dependencies, tasks, and effort needed to deliver thermal insulation to programs ahead of all cost/schedule targets
Bachelors of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and 14 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment OR
Masters of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and 12 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment
Technical working experience in a space hardware production environment
Candidate must currently possess or be eligible to obtain and maintain SCI access (successful completion of an SSBI - Single Scope Background Investigation)
Extensive experience with Thermal Insulation Products methodologies and design
Experience in Spacecraft Integration and Test
Excellent communication and presentation skills
