SSSD has an opening for a Senior Principal Opto-mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.
The Senior Principal Opto-mechanical Engineer will perform mechanical design and analysis for space, ground and airborne optical systems, tooling, and test equipment; this includes leading engineering design efforts of complex electro-optical and opto-mechanical systems, designing hardware that satisfies system requirements, documenting design approaches, and detailing part and assembly drawings to support the development, manufacture, and test of optical systems. This role offers cradle-to-grave hardware ownership from product conception to full rate production. Additionally, you will support new business opportunities and help develop junior engineers, designers, and technicians.
Essential Functions:
Perform electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical engineering on multiple projects through all phases of development and manufacturing
Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects involving electro-optical and opto-mechanical subsystems and configured items
Spearhead technical specifications, conceptual designs, trade studies, detail designs, procedures, assembly, testing, and reports
Create and review technical data packages including fabrication, source control, and assembly drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and internal drawing standards
Perform engineering analysis to validate design solutions with respect to alignment prescriptions, proper fit, environmental durability, manufacturability, schedule and cost
Provide technical solutions to complex problems which require regular use of technical acumen, ingenuity and creativity
Incorporate Design for Excellence (DFx) into product design to support transition from development to production
Support the on-time execution of development programs by proactively mitigating risks, pursuing opportunities, and coordinating across a multi-disciplinary team
Author and conduct internal design reviews to receive, provide, and incorporate feedback from peers and management ahead of key program milestones
Provide engineering leadership to material review boards and failure review boards
Work with agility and minimal direction to establish priorities and complete tasks on schedule
Employ strong interpersonal and communication skills while leading an integrated product team
Contribute content to cost, schedule, and technical volumes of outgoing bids and proposals
Demonstrate accountability to obtain results and achieve major organizational objectives

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 9 years of engineering professional experience; OR M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 7 years of engineering professional experience; OR PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university with 4 years of engineering professional experience
Must have 7 or more years of consistent use in Creo, Solidworks, NX, or CATIA V5 industry CAD software
Must have 4 or more years of experience involving design of electro-optical or opto-mechanical hardware for Aerospace and Defense applications
Must have experience dispositioning non-conforming opto-mechanical hardware at the component level taking into consideration system level impacts
Must have experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) applications per ASME Y.14-5
Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM technical discipline from an ABET accredited university
Active U.S. Government security clearance at the Top Secret level with a background investigation date within 6 years, OR an active U.S. Government SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within the last 5 years
Experience with decomposition and verification of opto-mechanical alignment requirements
Experience with selection and use of materials to achieve athermal optical systems
Experience with structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis pertaining to opto-mechanical hardware
Experience with application of Design for Excellence (DFx) pertaining to opto-mechanical hardware
Experience with metrology tools, interferometers, theodolites, coordinate measuring machines, laser trackers, Faro/Romer arms, alignment scopes, autocollimators, etc.
Cognizance of design, manufacturing, and verification processes associated with Class A Space hardware
