Northrop Grumman Sr. Principal Engineer Systems Survivability - Concept Integration in Redondo Beach, California

Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) is seeking a Sr. Principal System Engineer for System Survivability to be located in Redondo Beach, California. The qualified applicant will support a diverse portfolio of internally and externally funded research and technology development activities. As part of your assignment, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to determine how survivability technologies can best be integrated into air-based systems within the NGAS portfolio.

The Sr. Principal System Survivability Engineer applies extensive technical expertise in survivability design and integration, and has knowledge of related disciplines specifically design, integration, and fabrication of military aircraft.

Roles and Responsibilities

Utilize 1D, 2D, and 3D computational electromagnetic codes such as method of moments (MoM) and physical optics (PO) to develop technical solutions for supersonic, survivable edges and edge technologies

Apply previous experiences in design, fabrication, indoor and outdoor test, and data post-processing to verify survivability designs for survivable edge systems and components

Perform his/her tasks without appreciable direction, exercising considerable latitude in determining technical objectives and assignments

Lead technical teams, providing guidance and specific instruction to less experienced engineers

The System Survivability Engineer will be a part of an integrated product team (IPT), supporting multi-discipline advanced development programs and technology research and development (R&D). As well, this position may have project leadership responsibilities and include support of proposal efforts.


Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) disciplineand 9+ years engineering experience OR a Master's

Degree in a STEM discipline and 7+ years of engineering experience ORa PhD Degree ina STEM discipline and 4+ years of engineeringexperience

Minimum 5 years of experiencedirectly related to low observable technology development OR3 years of experience with Master's degree in a STEM program

Active DoD Secret clearance (or higher)

Preferred Qualifications:

BS/MS/PhD degrees in electrical engineering with upper division or graduate coursework in applied electromagnetic theory; BS/MS degrees in mechanical engineering with coursework in finite element analysis; BS/MS degrees in aerospace engineering with coursework in preliminary aircraft design

MS degree plus 9 year of experience directly related to low observable technology development; BS degree plus 11 years of experience

Experience working on conceptual vehicle design teams and basic understanding of supersonic design requirements as they related to edges

Knowledge of survivable edge design techniques and material technologies

Experience equivalent to leading at least one low observable technology from requirements and design phase through demonstration in a laboratory (TRL 4) or relevant environment (TRL 5)

Prior experience in related survivability components such as propulsion and airframe technologies

Experience proposing and running successful R&D efforts to develop survivable edge components and technology, including budget, schedule, tasking, and review of technical products

Experience with physical optics codes such as Xpatch and the ability to use meshing tools such as CAE, FMS, or Cubit (highly desired)

Experience with in-house or commercial Method of Moments codes such as SENTRi or HFSS

Experience working with model fabrication teams and test facilities

Experience with RCS data processing tools, such as Knowbell or Pioneer (highly desired)

Computer-aided drafting (CAD) skills using tools such as Catia or NX (a plus)

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Active DoD Top Secret level clearance and/or previous SAP/SAR clearance
