The Communications function at Northrop Grumman's historic Space Park campus in Redondo Beach, CA is looking for an experienced communications professional who geeks out about all things space, and would welcome the opportunity to build a world-class external communications team that does, too.
As the External Communications Manager, you'll lead a team of eight communicators tasked with planning and executing public relations, public affairs, executive communications, thought leadership, editorial & content marketing, and business communications for NG's Strategic Space Solutions Division (SSSD.) The role reports to the Director of Communications and is a member of the Communications leadership team.
Responsibilities:
Work with the Director of Communications and the Employee Communications & Marketing Communications managers to develop and implement a programmatic, integrated approach to all internal and external communications activities
Develop and manage all aspects of SSSD's external communications strategy in support of business, sector and corporate objectives
Manage a team tasked with delivering omni-channel communications plans that include all aspects of modern communications strategies, including: audience segmentation & targeting; public relations & media engagement; editorial & content marketing; customer & influencer engagement; advertising; organic & paid digital and social media promotion; tradeshow & event engagement
Manage the Executive Communications/Thought Leadership lead and Public Affairs leads, and ensure all related activities align with overall external communications campaigns and business goals
Lead the creation and implementation of a strategy to create close connections with members of the media, influencers, and industry think tanks, with the goal of increasing earned media coverage and placing our executives in high-profile media & thought leadership engagements
Lead performance measurement and metrics reporting for external communications activities, and ensure all activities are designed to be measured
Ensure all external communications work products are quality controlled and meet business, sector and corporate standards
Enable your team to achieve predictable and balanced results, while satisfying the needs of internal and external partners
Ensure your team has the information, tools and resources needed to do their best work
Treat all people with respect, and model personal growth and continuous development
Build and maintain an inclusive environment that attracts, retains, and inspires a diverse and engaged team
Budget management for all external communications activities
Day-to-day management of External Communications team members, including timekeeping, coaching and mentorship, mid-year and annual performance reviews, training, and staff development
Interact with and manage workflow to/from all external agency and service partners
Maintain brand voice and emphasize Northrop Grumman's culture and values in all external communications efforts
Work calmly and maintain good judgment in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree and at least 10 years of experience as a corporate communications professional; or a Master's degree and at least 8 years of experience as a corporate communications professional
3 or more years of experience in the aerospace & defense industry
2 or more years of experience in a formal lead role or management
2 or more years of experience in a government or military setting, or in a private sector role working with government or military customers
An active Secret clearance, and the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance
Demonstrated ability to create and implement communications strategies for highly technical classified and unclassified products and programs
Ability to build, lead and develop high-performance teams
Drive, determination, creativity and ambition
Outstanding speaking, writing and presentation skills
Excellent time management skills
Highly organized and detail-oriented
Ability to work independently while managing multiple deliverables
Highly skilled at delivering and receiving constructive feedback
A portfolio of material that demonstrates a mastery of writing and communication planning
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint and OneDrive
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Domestic and international travel may be required
