The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under Dept. of Defense Instruction 1322.29. The NG-MIP program is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service , for up to 180 days . The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as Active-duty service members .

Responsibilities for this internship position are:

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC) has developed the Northrop Grumman - Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge) utilizing the DoDI guidance for Skillbridge. During this program the service member will be on-site at his or her host company performing an individual internship in an entry to mid-level career type role. The service member will be on the job training supporting a work schedule equivalent to 40hrs per week. Outlined below are the Goals, Objectives, and Outcomes for the program.

Goals - Provide transitioning service members fellowship-style job skills training during the last portion(s) of their military commitment. This program is specifically designed to offer internships that result in the potential to transition to a full-time opportunity as the conclusion of the training. Interns will serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into NGC.

Objectives - Service Members who complete the Intern program will be highly trained, capable, future employees that align to the specific needs of the organization and are prepared to meet the NG mission "Defining Possible" on Day 1. This program provides a comprehensive internship experience including professional development, networking with leadership, and training specifically focused on NG leadership principles, company history, customer/stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.

DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty

  • Is within 12 months of separation or retirement

  • Will receive an honorable discharge

  • Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS

  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months

  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship

We at Northrop Grumman Defense Systems are seeking a Principal Environmental & Safety Engineer to support our site in Plymouth, MN.

The Environmental & Safety Engineer will play a critical role in driving improvements needed to protect the safety and health of our team and environment, within a dynamic defense business.

Observes work processes for compliance with Environmental Health and Safety regulatory and Northrop Grumman standards. Assist with developing improvement opportunities for problem area. Conducts data collection & review, file management and sample collection. Evaluates collected data and converts it into a presentable format. Supports the preparation and delivery of internal training and participates in regulatory interactions. Plans and responds to safety or environmental related emergency situations and events.

Position may be filled as a level II (EHS Engineer), or level III (Principal EHS Engineer), according to the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the requirements of the position.

Responsibilities of this role:

  • This position will be a 50% safety and 50% environmental position.

  • Observes, records, analyzes and affects change of EH&S compliance-related activities as necessary. Interacts with federal, state and local regulators to resolve compliance issues and takes part with intermittent governmental inspections.

  • Review Detailed and Standard Operating procedures and approve or revise for safety compliance.

  • Utilizes Root Cause and Problem Solving tools. Provides creative and practical technical solutions to a moderate range of challenges.

  • Collects, evaluates and interprets relevant EH&S related data and metrics. Prepares environmental, health and safety work procedure documentation and corporate reports as required.

  • Create and conduct EH&S training courses as necessary.

  • Assist with waste shipment preparations (hazardous waste, scrap electronics, etc.) and respond to waste characterization and disposal questions.

  • Provides input for external communications to customers, regulators & shareholders. Prepares communications to internal management.

  • Assist in conducting weekly/monthly environmental inspections such as hazardous waste, spill prevention or stormwater protection, including follow-up on discrepancies.

  • Participate and/or Lead internal actions and activities related to event investigations, spill response, MERT responses, etc.

  • May conduct studies and collect samples to determine environmental impact of company operations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications for EHS Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science/Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent technical area (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, etc.)

  • 2 years EHS/Safety experience, or master's degree in relevant technical area in lieu of experience.

Minimum qualifications for Principal EHS Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science/Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or equivalent technical area (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, etc.) or High School diploma with 9 years experience

  • 5 years EHS/Safety experience, or master's degree in relevant technical area plus 3 years of experience.

  • Meets DoD SkillBridge qualifications as per DODI 1322.29

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates thorough understanding and broad application of technical standards, principles, theories, and techniques in environmental and/or safety engineering.

  • Fluent in use of Microsoft applications and ability to quickly learn new computer programs/applications.

  • Utilizes technical writing skills.

  • Able to read and understand operational procedures, government regulations, and safety data sheets.

  • Can manage data within the incident reporting tool.

  • Strong interpersonal skills are needed to build trust and influence others to resolve conflicts and support a variety of EHS initiatives.

  • Interprets federal and state laws, regulations, and orders as they apply to environmental practices, and implements policies and procedures to ensure that these practices are in compliance with the appropriate statutes and regulations, and that regulatory reporting requirements are met.

  • Experience with environmental reporting a plus.


Salary Range: $73,600 - $110,400

Salary Range 2: $90,600 - $136,000

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
