Northrop Grumman Structural Engineering Manager in Middle River, Maryland
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems, Special Mission Aircraft Operating Unit seeks a Structural Engineering Manager to lead our mechanical engineering technical team engaged in the modification, system testing, upgrades and sustenance of special mission aircraft systems. Team technical focus is on developing and certifying sensor and supporting payloads unto commercial air frames for military and government applications. The position will lead a team of 8-12 engineers engaged in the aircraft structures, aerodynamics, systems, drafting and reliability domains across multiple programs and projects. FAA airworthiness and certification is a major component of all projects and the ideal candidate will have strong experience with managing certification projects. Specific duties include: Directly manage 8-12 engineers and drafters, with direct functional management of the team. Coordinating engineering resources and estimates to support business development, current efforts and internal improvement projects Managing the technical aspects and engineering processes associated with our AS 9100 quality management system. Provide direct oversight of FAA Certification projects to include Supplemental Type Certificates (STC's) and field approvals for major alterations to airframes. This includes coordinating project certification plans both internally and with supporting vendors. Mentor and coach junior engineers and personally lead employee engagement efforts Manage and direct engineering deliverables, approve drawings and design review documentation Develop plans to improve team capabilities in key technology areas, to include projects to improve aircraft aerodynamic performance. Coordinate efforts directly between engineering, production and supply chain activities to ensure that shop floor production milestones are executed on time and budget.
Basic Qualifications: Expert knowledge and understanding of FAA 14 CFR Part 23 & Part 25 aircraft certifications requirements and the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) process. BS Degree in Engineering and 7 or more years of experience in flight test and aircraft operations. 2 or more years of experience as a technical lead or manager. Prior experience integrating surveillance and communication technologies and systems onto aircraft. Demonstrated advanced level of understanding in aircraft modification and integration and general understanding of several diverse disciplines (Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Aircraft design) in support of FAA and DoD airworthiness certification programs. DoD Secret Clearance U.S. Citizenship is required Preferred Qualifications: M.S. degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, or Business Administration FAA certified Designated Engineering Representative (DER). Structures domain with ability to oversee major alterations is highly preferred. Previous domain experience with special mission aircraft, UAS systems and/or rapid fielding engineering support to include former military or government service.
