The Optics technician supports a variety of optical alignment, integration and test operations to include metrology of spacecraft and critical GSE components using a variety of equipment including portable coordinate measuring machines This is frequently done as part of an engineer/technician team paired with either a lead ETIS III or civil servant engineer.
The Union position is located at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD.
Provide metrology and alignment support to function engineers for scientific instruments and spacecraft systems. Will utilize theodolites, laser trackers, laser radars and portable CMM arms.
Support maintenance, calibration and quarterly checkout of all assigned metrology systems.
Maintain inventory of metrology support equipment.
Support design of fixtures needed for project alignment, integration and test activities.
Maintain calibration and serviceability of optical instrumentation and accessories assigned to projects.
Support theodolite metrology operations as required.
Maintain lab facility cleanliness and organization of equipment.
Additional equipment maintenance and logistical duties as required.
May be cross-utilized and cross-trained to support all areas within the Optics Group in order to develop overlapping workforce skills.
Must be able to:
Works from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, scissor lifts, etc.
Works while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling or in a prone position for extended times.
Works in closely confined spaces.
Lift and carry items up to 35 pounds.
Pushes and pulls heavy objects.
Ability to use hearing and vision protection. Ability to distinguish colors.
Work indoors in ambient conditions, frequently in a clean room environment.
Work with other personnel in a group that is team-oriented.
Accept and work within established policies and procedures pertaining to company rules and regulations.
Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other related training or certifications as directed by ETIS III management.
Must be able to use Microsoft Office Suite software including Word and Excel
Education or years' experience commensurate with skill level required for position complexity as determined by management. 8+ years of experience supporting metrology, optical alignment and component development.
Familiarity with metal fabrication shop equipment.
Knowledge of engineering terms required. Ability to perform with minimal supervision read/interpret schematics and work from sketches/drawings required.
Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of large hazardous research aerospace test facilities.
