Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for the JWST Ground Operations Director. This role is responsible for development, procurement, and delivery of products used in integration, test, verification, validation, and operations of a first-of-a-kind NASA Observatory.

These products include key program deliverables like the System Test Controller (STC), Master Command & Telemetry Database (MCTDb), Recommended Operating Procedures (ROPS), Signatures Limitations & Constraints Database (SLCdb), Stored Command Sequences (SCSs), and a variety of test products.

The Ground Operations Director will lead a cascade of training and rehearsal events necessary to ready the flight operations team for launch, commissioning, calibration, and operations including development and execution of scenarios intended to stress the team and maximize readiness for any day-of-launch or operational scenario. To this end, the GO Director will lead the development of training and operational material to meet this objective.

The Ground Operations Director is responsible for cost, schedule, and risk associated with scope valued over $104M ($25M ETC), leads all related JWST negotiations, collaborates with NASA customer counterparts, and fosters strong subcontractor/customer partnerships.

The Ground Operations Director will lead a subcontract to acquire the flight operations & control system and serve as the primary contractor interface to NASA on all matters pertaining to Observatory ground operations.

In support of all of these responsibilities, the Ground Operations Director will lead the day-to-day efforts of a team of engineers including partnership with the functional homeroom on staffing, career development, financial resource management, process feedback, and program execution.

The GO Director will perform ongoing assessments of customer requirements, and develop strategies that align the customer's needs/opportunities with Northrop Grumman's capabilities. The selected individual will be responsible to support account growth, new business development, and customer relationship management.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with a minimum of 9 years of Systems Engineering and/or Program Management experience within the Aerospace Industry.

  • Experience and adeptness in leading and interacting with business executives and technical professionals of various levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically; motivate/energize a team and ability to develop and execute the program plan.

  • Experience with satellite operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree is preferred

  • Experience with NASA GSFC customer

  • Experience with the ground systems architecture and development

  • Experience leading and managing dispersed teams
