Successful candidates for this position will work in a technical role for the National Security Systems (NSS) business area in the Space Domain Awareness OU. This operating unit includes technical roles at the mission, segment, subsystem and component level. They span the entire program life cycle from early concept studies, design development, system integration/test, launch and early ops, mission ops/sustainment and system disposal.

The position is based in NG’s Dulles VA location and will require some travel. This role is responsible for the overall ground system architecture as we migrate from the existing ground system to a new implementation. Duties include significant contributions to mission and space vehicle systems engineering activities: requirement analysis and functional decomposition, system modeling and simulation, mission analysis, mission operations support, conceptual, preliminary and detailed system and space vehicle design, trade studies, systems integration and test, system interface definition and management, requirements/V&V, and Business Development support.

The candidate should be knowledgeable in system-of-systems engineering, space vehicle design and integration, ground segment design and integration, segment and subsystem interfaces, payloads, and/or mission operations.

The role will include interface with clients, as well as regular interactions with internal engineering teammates and program management. The candidate may be called on to assist in new business activities such as conceptual design and analysis for proposals and funded studies.

Successful candidates for this position will primarily support the ground segment PM and Systems engineering lead and daily responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting in efforts to on-ramp design changes to the ground segment (hardware and software)

  • Scope management and allocation support to program management

  • Understanding of the scope of the program

  • Working with leads and individual contributor to ensure scope is appropriately charged

  • Conducting and coordinating variance analysis; working with subject matter experts and leads to understand the true root causes of variance; translation of findings into customer deliverable explanations

  • Create, evolve, and maintain system architecture

  • Own architectural and system level requirements and customer interface (work with customer to understand what requirements really mean)

  • Define control and verify interface requirements (owns ICD based requirements, ensure component interfaces work)

  • Coordination with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that all needs, goals and objectives are well understood and develop overall Concept of Operations

  • Ensuring cross product team collaboration (space, ground, mission) in the architecture, development, integration and deployment needs and issues

  • Managing and de-conflicting multiple development-related schedules, identifying key giver/receivers with other (internal and external) groups

  • Owning a common architecture development plan and ensure the successful execution of that process

  • Having regular customer interactions, coordination and status briefings

  • Serving as a mentor to other team members to ensure technical growth and productivity improvement

  • Developing cost estimates for new business proposals

  • Providing an input on the long-term trajectory of several programs including preparing for technology evolution, program growth and obsolescence

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math or related area and 12 years of experience; M.S. in STEM or related area and 10 years of experience

  • Must have US Citizenship with current or active Top Secret/SCI Clearance at time of application

  • Experience leading technical teams

  • Experience in systems development, integration, and test

  • Understanding of DoD systems engineering requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Ground Systems

  • Familiarity with software development and agile processes

  • A history working on enterprise systems with a service-oriented architecture

  • Understanding of program technical content sufficiently to support program management and leads in detailed planning of program technical scope in an Agile rolling wave construct

  • Support to program management and partner/customer management to ensure contract compliance, adequate and accurate reporting, and consistent completion of scope

Salary Range: $165,000 - $247,600

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
