Senior Principal Supplier Manufacturing Engineer - Devens MA

Adaptive Optics Associates - Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems (NGSP) Business Venture, is currently seeking a Senior Principal Supplier Manufacturing Engineer to support business activities in Devens MA.

AOA Xinetics (AOX) designs, develops, and manufactures precision, advanced optical products and systems for the U.S. Government, commercial customers, and U.S. defense prime and second-tier contractors. The Company has substantial growth opportunities in support of many U.S. Government and NGSP business initiatives.

AOX delivers industrial photonics systems and development services for a variety of customers and applications. AOX excels in a range of applications from adaptive optical systems, deformable mirrors, wavefront sensors, precision actuators, to photonic systems that acquire and process data in real time for a variety of high availability applications. AOX's capabilities include lightweight passive and active hybrid CERAFORM silicon carbide optics and precision structures as well as large and small precision opto-mechanical systems supporting electronics and sophisticated controls software.

Overview

Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, the Senior Principal Supplier Manufacturing Engineer will liaison supplier/vendor relationships as the lead technical interface between product engineering and production, and will be responsible for critical component development and qualification activities at suppliers. This position involves communicating well with internal and external teams, traveling to suppliers in different regions, and on-the-spot critical decision making; the goal is to deliver on time quantities of high quality component parts into our production processes to enable and improve development cycles and product launches within a fast-paced, highly technical NG Strategic Space Systems work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the fabrication of complex machined parts and sub-assemblies by providing technical expertise and support to suppliers

  • Prepare and conduct part risk assessments with suppliers

  • Review supplier manufacturing processes and capabilities to ensure part yield requirements match engineering drawings and specifications

  • Partner with internal teams to understand design intent and communicate design intent to the suppliers

  • Establish piece part and assembly costs and conduct engineering quote support

  • Work with suppliers to coordinate work orders containing outside and inside operations

  • Recommend tooling, fixturing and concepts to help suppliers manufacture complex components

  • Assist suppliers in resolving problems related to the manufacture of parts

  • Review manufacturing specifications and provide technical guidance on the specifications

  • Review new product designs and identify manufacturing concerns and communicate these to design using a data driven approach

  • Partner with suppliers and Design Engineering to conduct DFM activities on new designs

  • Create and participate in FMEA activities with the suppliers

  • Conduct gage R&R's with internal team and suppliers, and review gage R&R data

  • Review process capability data

  • Drive suppliers to zero defect utilizing AS9145 concepts

  • Maintain an approved supplier list as well as research and source alternative suppliers, as needed

  • Understand current technologies utilized in manufacturing processes but also investigates emerging technologies in the supply chain

  • Coordinate with material planning by creating and updating supplier capability charts as required

  • Identify and propose manufacturing improvements projects with suppliers

  • Respond to production process problems and drive the implementation of solutions

  • Collaborate with Quality Engineers to reduce defects and maintain high production yield rates

  • Contribute to work order standard generation with Production Control

  • Collaborate with Product Engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best use work cell capabilities and manufacturing processes to assure "design for manufacturing" products

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • 5+ years of experience as a supplier/vendor liaison within a manufacturing engineering/production work environment

  • Expert in ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T

  • AS9100, ISO 9001-2008 and AS9145 quality requirements

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills

  • Critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills

  • Ability to identify and predict technical risks

  • Working knowledge of Cause and Effect Analysis/Continuous Improvement Methodologies e.g. Ishikawa, Lean Six Sigma

  • Proficient Solidworks design skills or similar software

  • Proficient MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time

  • U.S. Citizenship is a requirement for employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • 10+ years of experience as a supplier/vendor liaison within a manufacturing engineering/production environment

  • Experience working with micro or small precision form factor mechanisms; opto-mechanical designs; deformable mirrors, optical assembly, interferometer and alignment, test equipment and tools and the manufacture of optical components or similar

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel domestically up to 50% of the time with international travel required, as needed
