Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems has an opening for a Sr. Principal Structural Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, UT.

The selected candidate will support metallic and composite analysis, design and manufacturing for both commercial and military programs. Work directly as a team with other internal engineering disciplines and departments to address/resolve design and manufacturing issues and to ensure the on-time delivery of structures and assemblies to both internal and external customers. Northrop Grumman supports a 9/80 work schedule with limited occasional travel to support company initiatives and program requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • The qualified candidate provides support to an assigned program under minimal supervision

  • Directs and leads junior engineers on structural analysis methods

  • The candidate researches, develops, designs, tests, documents, and recommends solutions to engineering mechanical/composite components and assemblies as assigned

  • Maintains and improves part designs, equipment, and systems in support of production deliveries

  • Capable of performing structural analysis to a wide variety of designs and materials including both composites and metals. Analysis includes but not limited to static, dynamic, fatigue and damage tolerance. Able to manipulate large scale finite element models that support internal loads development.

  • Plans, performs, and directs engineering activities to ensure design, production, and testing conform to mechanical design specifications and requirements

  • Will also be responsible for gathering, maintaining, formatting, compiling, and manipulating technical data, such as laboratory or material test results and engineering design changes

  • Produces engineering documentation, reports, drawings (flow charts, block diagrams, and schematics)

  • Conducts tests and records data to assist with engineering evaluation or analysis

  • Responsible to ensure material allowable database is up to date working in collaboration with program technical leads

  • Perform finite element modeling of metallic and composite material components.

Candidate must be comfortable in a hands on lab environment and be able to collaborate closely with system engineers, hardware designers, technicians, and integration/test engineers.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in a STEM discipline and 9 years of experience or a Master's Degree in a STEM Discipline with 7 year of experience

  • Active DoD Secret clearance

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain special program access clearance

  • Experience with composite and metallic materials including allowables

  • Experience with finite element analysis

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with 3D modeling software

  • Practical understanding of composite structures

  • Experience with Nastran/Patran/Femap/Afgrow/Abaqus and other finite element software's

  • General understanding of Aerospace practices, policies, and procedures

  • Detail orientated, self-starter, ability to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Experience with material allowable database

  • Experience leading engineers in structural analysis
